It's all coming via the USENET gateway. I guess that messages from the
newsgroup are passed directly to the mail lists without going through
spam assassin first, so we may not have much ability to block them other
than turning off the gateway.

I would say, whatever spam filter you have in place for your e-mail
client... change it. I don't see more than 2 spam messages per day in
my Inbox, everything else is cleverly filtered out by GMail.

And, by the way, before complaining about this "immense" spam attack
you are subject to, I would suggest you to say "thank you" to all the
wx-devs and mailing-lists-maintainers for the effort they have put in
to try to improve the delivery of messages in the wxWidgets/wxPython
fora, SVN access and everything that comes with them. It's their spare
time and they are working for us.

Of course I am thankful. Thank you to everyone.

I dont have any spam options with the client I am using, I dont think its
needed. I am on several mailing lists, this is the only one that has
spam, and the only spam I recieve is from this list.

Yes, Andrea, you are right. I do want to thank the devs for their work.

However, to your point of "just adjusting [the] spam filter" - that
won't do anything for those people who search this list in the future
and have their results polluted by spam messages.

But if there really is nothing that can be done to filter the spam
before it hits the list or archives, so be it.

No touch, I am not a wx-dev nor a list maintainer. And I have zero
clue of what "brown nose" means, but you are surely mistaken.

How do you link complaining about the spam with not being thankful to wx-devs ?

I kept receiving spam in the last few days and I'm also getting sick of it and I was also thinking of unsubscribing. That's the only mailing list that I'm subscribed to and in which there's spam.
Ok and since you seem a bit touchy, i'm just sharing my opinion, hopefully you can tolerate that.

Geez ppl keep calm.
Spam will be always a step forward than anti-spam. There is no such
filter as 100% spam filter. I got about 20 spam mails on all huge list
that I received. For me it's a good score:-)
A max good solution is to write your own black list:-)

BTW When the lists.wxwidgets.org will be officially closed? To be honest
I don't know on what list write any question ;)

Best Wishes,
Marek

Google still hasn't approved my mass invites, so not a lot of people
have signed up for the new lists yet, so I've held off closing the old
lists so far. I'd like to encourage everyone reading this to please go
ahead and sign up manually for the new Google Groups so we can make the
transition. I've updated the links and addresses at
http://wxwidgets.org/support/maillst2.htm to help you out with this.

Also, I think I've got the right addresses subscribed to forward
messages sent to the old list to the new group, so if you see duplicates
for a while that is why. When I close the old lists then I'll just
leave a simple mail alias in place to take care of this, but for now it
is done by subscribing the new group to the old list, and also allowing
the old list to post to the new group. (Yes it's a bit confusing which
is why I'm not 100% sure it's working yet.) Since that forwarding has
to get through the usual clogged pipes from wxwidgets.org to google then
the copies will probably be somewhat delayed.

It's not a matter of a better solution, the question is
why has it suddenly got so bad - it's jumped from
practically nothing, to dozens a day. Is this due to the google
mail list hosting ? If so, then perhaps the move
to google mail lists isn't such a good idea ...

I read multiple usenet groups (that's where I'm reading this) - there's
been a noticable surge in spam across the board. Such is the nature of
usenet...

The timing would suggest that the move to Google Groups is a factor,
but it appears that all the spam is going to the old list (this one)
via the nntp gateway, not to the new Google hosted one. In terms of
cause and effect, I can't think why that would be.

No, if you look at the messages they all have the Newsgroups: header so
it's all coming from the comp.soft-sys.wxwindows news group which is
then sent on to wx-users via our newsgroup gateway. We've almost aways
had a gateway between that newsgroup and wx-users, and it has always
been a hole through the first layer of filters, but apparently somebody
new has recently discovered that USENET is a great way to send
unsolicited messages without any filters and is also using a message
format that is making it through the typical client-side filter too.

So far there has been exactly one spam message that has come via the
google groups and thanks to Google's features I was able to report it as
spam and ban the user from our groups. So although it's still possible
to get spam that way, it's a bit harder for them to get away with it.

Is it due to the gateway that all these spam mails have the header
Organization: Usenet Monster - http://www.usenetmonster.com

Or is this the hoster of the newsgroup?

Chip, it began only in the last week. I hope they'll fix it. I don't
remember getting that amount of spam before (now its pretty unbearable.. A
spam message each few minutes).

Oh, it only began last week?

Well maybe that's alright... though I just registered last night,
actually early this mornin', and have already had 30+ msg's from this
list which I had to delete...

Maybe if you could email me directly once the problem is solved?

In the meantime, I'll spam messages from this list, in order not to
miss a reply from my topic.

Thanks mate!

IIRC the Organization header is added by the originating NNTP server if
the originating NNTP client didn't already add it.

Does anyone know how to get Firefox to filter on the header? Or even
the Organization field in the header?

Thanks in advance.
