Discussion:
The invisible xorg.conf

I just did a clean install of Ubuntu 9.04 and found that
/etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty. I suppose the new Xorg detects
VGA hardware automagically every time it starts up.

If that's the case, I really want to know the content of the invisible
xorg.conf of the xorg.conf-less Xorg. You knew that each section of
xorg.conf has a device name.

If I want to customize the hidden xorg.conf, I have to know the names of
each section.....

So what is the section names in that hidden/invisible xorg.conf?

try (as root)

X -configure

and it will crerate an xorg.xonf.new file with the autodetected values in
the current directory.

X -configure
Ubuntu uses `dpkg-reconfigure xorg-xserver`

`X -configure` creates an xorg.conf, but it's not the one detected by
Xorg itself when /etc/X11/xorg.conf is empty.

This is a wxWidgets mailing list. It was formerly known as wxWindows. It
is not X-Windows, it's Wx-windows, not the W at the start.

You should really ask at some X-Windows related forum, mailing list or
newsgroup.

This! This is what you want!

Replace the /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the contents of this file, and you
SHOULD notice no change in behavior.

You will then have a proper xorg.conf to modify.

Or just read through /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Actually Xorg uses HAL to detect hardware and there is no "invisible
xorg.conf", only HAL-specific settings (.fdi xml files). You can however try to
generage your xorg.conf by Xorg -configure. That generates the configuration
which Xorg essentially use. Then you want to add something like this into the
file:

Section "ServerFlags"
Option "AutoAddDevices" "false"
EndSection

This will disable HAL support and revert back to classic xorg.conf settings
where most hardware must be configured manually.

HAL is only used to detect input devices, all the other hardware is
detected by Xorg itself.

Does anyone use bakefile to generate makefiles or do you pretty much use VC++ or another IDE?

I can't seem to get even a trivial bakefile to work and there isn't much documentation on that.

I'm using WinXP with mingw.

Thanks
Chris

Why not share your keywords? I tried "ubuntu empty xorg.conf". No good
result.
